The Challenge

Ports America Florida engaged ZPMC USA to relocate one Sumitomo ship-to-shore crane (CR3) and stage another (CR1) for demolition at Port Tampa Bay. Both cranes needed to be moved from Berth 213 to Berth 212 using self-propelled modular transporters and a proprietary crane carrying system. CR3 was repositioned and reconnected to the existing power supply. CR1 was shifted to a demolition area at the north end of the wharf, reusable components removed, and the structure secured for controlled demolition.

Our Approach

ZPMC USA and trusted partners developed a comprehensive plan to carry out the relocation and demolition safely and with minimal impact on terminal operations. The team de-energized the cranes and cleared the work zone before installing a temporary rail system to support CR1 during staging. Using SPMTs and custom load-distribution beams, both cranes were lifted off their rails and transported along a carefully coordinated route. CR3 was placed on the new gantry rails, aligned, and reconnected. CR1 was shifted onto temporary rail and secured. Heavy-lift cranes then dismantled CR1 piece by piece, recovering components specified for reuse and preparing scrap for recycling. The off-wharf staging strategy kept the berth accessible throughout.

Outcome

The relocation phase was completed on schedule within the three-week timeframe, with CR3 back in service at its new berth. CR1 was safely staged on temporary rails with dismantling underway and salvageable parts preserved. No recordable safety incidents. Port operations continued throughout the relocation.
