DP World CR30 & CR31 STS Crane Relocation
Turnkey Modification, Relocation & Commissioning
The Challenge
ZPMC USA was engaged to relocate two Hyundai Paceco ship-to-shore cranes (CR30 & CR31) from the South Carolina State Ports Authority’s Wando Welch Terminal in Charleston to DP World’s terminal in Saint John, New Brunswick. The project required four phases: initial relocation within Charleston, structural modifications for the new wharf, overseas transportation by heavy-lift vessel, and final installation and commissioning. Structural modifications included relocating tie-down connection points, converting gantry stowage pins to a single-pin design, inserting spacer plates at waterside sill connections, and re-routing the gantry cable reel to meet Saint John wharf requirements.
Our Approach
Executed as a fully turnkey operation. In Phase 1, both cranes were moved from their original positions to a secure work zone at Wando Welch. In Phase 2, ZPMC USA performed all structural modifications, fabricated new components, lowered the upper works and trolley girders, and prepared the cranes for shipment. For Phase 3, ZPMC USA chartered a heavy-lift vessel, developed loading and ballast plans, loaded each crane using SPMTs and their proprietary crane-carrying system, fabricated and installed custom sea-fastenings, and sailed the cranes from Charleston to Saint John. In Phase 4, the crew offloaded the cranes, raised the upper works, reconnected all electrical and mechanical systems, and commissioned the cranes on their new rails. By combining engineering, heavy-lift logistics, and project management under one roof, ZPMC USA eliminated hand-offs and enabled rapid decision-making.
Outcome
The project was completed on time despite an accelerated schedule, with both cranes fully operational in Saint John before the 2023 peak season. The integrated approach minimized downtime and ensured safe handling of each 1,170-ton crane, demonstrating ZPMC USA’s capability to deliver complex international crane relocations efficiently and safely.
